Learning Through Play Circa. 1917!
You may be familiar with the Lego Education concept of “Learning Through Play” But I bet you didn’t know the concept dates back to 1917! According to Edgar James Swift “The value of constructive play as a factor in development is an unworked educational mine.”! You’ll find this and more in a book on the Public Domain Review website, where out of copyright books and more can be found. In fact, this book could be considered a Maker Ed handbook for today, except it was published in 1917! “Manual Training – Play Problems: Constructive Work for Boys and Girls Based on the Play Interest” by William S. Marten is a must read for Maker/Fab educators. It’s full of pedagogy suggestions, resource list, tool & materials handling tips and many project ideas that can be adapted for use in today’s Makerspace activities.
